How the Standard Rate Turn Calculator works
In a coordinated turn tan(bank) = turn rate (rad/s) × speed (m/s) ÷ 9.80665. Turn radius = speed ÷ turn rate. Load factor = 1 ÷ cos(bank), and stall speed rises by the square root of the load factor. A standard rate turn is 3° per second, a full circle in two minutes. Faster aircraft need a steeper bank to hold the same rate, which is why the rule of thumb bank = TAS ÷ 10 + 7 is only a rough guide. Example: with True airspeed 100 kt, Turn rate 3 °/s, and Stall speed, wings level 50 kt, the result is Bank angle (°) = 15.4; Turn radius (m) = 983; Turn radius (NM) = 0.53.
Inputs and results
The Standard Rate Turn Calculator takes 3 inputs and gives 6 results.
What you enter
- True airspeed (kt) — starts at 100.
- Turn rate (°/s) — starts at 3.
- Stall speed, wings level (kt) — starts at 50.
What you get
- Bank angle (°)
- Turn radius (m)
- Turn radius (NM)
- Load factor (g)
- Stall speed in the turn (kt)
- Time for a full 360° turn (seconds)
Example: Standard Rate Turn Calculator with the starting values
With true airspeed 100 kt, turn rate 3 °/s and stall speed, wings level 50 kt, the calculator returns:
| Bank angle (°) | 15.4 |
|---|---|
| Turn radius (m) | 983 |
| Turn radius (NM) | 0.53 |
| Load factor (g) | 1.04 |
| Stall speed in the turn (kt) | 50.9 |
| Time for a full 360° turn (seconds) | 120 |

Standard Rate Turn Calculator FAQ
How do I use the Standard Rate Turn Calculator?
Enter true airspeed, turn rate and stall speed, wings level in the fields, then read bank angle (°), turn radius (m), turn radius (nm) and load factor (g) in the result panel. The answer updates as you type, and you can press Calculate or Enter to refresh it. Use “Copy link” to share your exact numbers with someone else.
What does the Standard Rate Turn Calculator calculate?
Bank angle, turn radius, and stall speed in a coordinated turn. It returns bank angle (°), turn radius (m), turn radius (nm) and load factor (g) from the 3 values you provide.
What values does the Standard Rate Turn Calculator start with?
It opens with true airspeed 100 kt, turn rate 3 °/s and stall speed, wings level 50 kt so you can see a working result straight away. Replace them with your own numbers, or press Reset to return to these starting values.
Is the Standard Rate Turn Calculator free and private?
Yes. It is free, needs no account, and runs in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to or stored on our servers. See the Privacy Policy for details.
Can I rely on the Standard Rate Turn Calculator for important decisions?
Treat the result as a well-rounded estimate. Real situations often have details a general calculator cannot know, so confirm important decisions with a qualified professional. See the Disclaimer for more.
