How the Wind Turbine Power Calculator works
Power in the wind = ½ × air density × swept area × wind speed³. A turbine can only capture a share of it, set by Cp (the theoretical limit is 0.593, real turbines reach 0.30–0.45). Because power rises with the cube of wind speed, doubling wind speed gives eight times the power. Real output varies with wind. Example: with the default values, electrical power comes to 7,758 W.
Inputs and results
The Wind Turbine Power Calculator takes 5 inputs and gives 4 results.
What you enter
- Rotor radius (blade length) (m) — starts at 5.
- Wind speed (m/s) — starts at 8.
- Power coefficient (Cp) — starts at 0.35.
- Air density (kg/m³) — starts at 1.225.
- Generator and drivetrain efficiency (%) — starts at 90.
What you get
- Electrical power (W)
- Power in the wind (W)
- Rotor swept area (m²)
- Energy if steady for 24 h (kWh)
Example: Wind Turbine Power Calculator with the starting values
With rotor radius (blade length) 5 m, wind speed 8 m/s, power coefficient (cp) 0.35, air density 1.225 kg/m³ and generator and drivetrain efficiency 90 %, the calculator returns:
| Electrical power (W) | 7,758 |
|---|---|
| Power in the wind (W) | 24,630 |
| Rotor swept area (m²) | 78.5 |
| Energy if steady for 24 h (kWh) | 186.2 |
Change any value above and the results update straight away.
Wind Turbine Power Calculator FAQ
How do I use the Wind Turbine Power Calculator?
Enter rotor radius (blade length), wind speed, power coefficient (cp) and air density in the fields, then read electrical power (w), power in the wind (w), rotor swept area (m²) and energy if steady for 24 h (kwh) in the result panel. The answer updates as you type, and you can press Calculate or Enter to refresh it. Use “Copy link” to share your exact numbers with someone else.
What does the Wind Turbine Power Calculator calculate?
Estimate power from a wind turbine. It returns electrical power (w), power in the wind (w), rotor swept area (m²) and energy if steady for 24 h (kwh) from the 5 values you provide.
What values does the Wind Turbine Power Calculator start with?
It opens with rotor radius (blade length) 5 m, wind speed 8 m/s, power coefficient (cp) 0.35 and air density 1.225 kg/m³ so you can see a working result straight away. Replace them with your own numbers, or press Reset to return to these starting values.
Is the Wind Turbine Power Calculator free and private?
Yes. It is free, needs no account, and runs in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to or stored on our servers. See the Privacy Policy for details.
Can I rely on the Wind Turbine Power Calculator for important decisions?
Treat the result as a well-rounded estimate. Real situations often have details a general calculator cannot know, so confirm important decisions with a qualified professional. See the Disclaimer for more.
