How the Field of View Calculator works

Angle of view = 2 × arctan(d ÷ 2f), where d is the sensor dimension and f is the focal length. The formula assumes the lens is focused at infinity. Focusing closer narrows the real angle slightly, especially on macro lenses. Full frame is 36 × 24 mm and APS-C is about 23.5 × 15.6 mm. Example: A 50 mm lens on a 36 × 24 mm sensor covers 39.6° horizontally, 27° vertically, and 46.8° diagonally.

Inputs and results

The Field of View Calculator takes 3 inputs and gives 3 results.

What you enter

  • Focal length (mm) — starts at 50.
  • Sensor width (mm) — starts at 36.
  • Sensor height (mm) — starts at 24.

What you get

  • Horizontal angle of view (°)
  • Vertical angle of view (°)
  • Diagonal angle of view (°)

Example: Field of View Calculator with the starting values

With focal length 50 mm, sensor width 36 mm and sensor height 24 mm, the calculator returns:

Example results
Horizontal angle of view (°)39.6
Vertical angle of view (°)27
Diagonal angle of view (°)46.8

Change any value above and the results update straight away.

Field of View Calculator FAQ

How do I use the Field of View Calculator?

Enter focal length, sensor width and sensor height in the fields, then read horizontal angle of view (°), vertical angle of view (°) and diagonal angle of view (°) in the result panel. The answer updates as you type, and you can press Calculate or Enter to refresh it. Use “Copy link” to share your exact numbers with someone else.

What does the Field of View Calculator calculate?

Horizontal, vertical, and diagonal angle of view for a lens and sensor. It returns horizontal angle of view (°), vertical angle of view (°) and diagonal angle of view (°) from the 3 values you provide.

What values does the Field of View Calculator start with?

It opens with focal length 50 mm, sensor width 36 mm and sensor height 24 mm so you can see a working result straight away. Replace them with your own numbers, or press Reset to return to these starting values.

Is the Field of View Calculator free and private?

Yes. It is free, needs no account, and runs in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to or stored on our servers. See the Privacy Policy for details.

Can I rely on the Field of View Calculator for important decisions?
